Future Plans...

So, after we return home, what next?

Maybe I should write a book based on my travel experiences...

Lost Teacher?

"Lost Teacher" was a bad translation of my Chinese name (the characters actually mean teacher and journey... and are a phonetic match for my English name).   In order to do anything official in Taiwan (open a bank account, buy a scooter..) you need a name stamp or "chop", with a Chinese name to stamp all official papers.  I used mandarintools.com Chinese name creator to find me a name based on my English name.  My Taiwanese collegues told me it was a silly name, and that everyone would know I was a foreigner if I used this name.  However, I have met many Taiwanese people who use English names such as "Mr Hallelujah", "Phantom", "Pumpkin" and many more - what's so bad about being "lost teacher"?

Little Dragon?

Taiwan is known as one of Asia's economic "Little Dragons" - so the Lonely Planet guidebook tells me.

To find out loads of information about Taiwan, see the Lonely Planet website.

I arrived in Taiwan with my girlfriend Sally in August 2003.  We both work as teachers in a private school, Jump Start, in Tainan.  We teach Taiwanese children to speak English in a total immersion English environment.  We came to Taiwan to experience a different culture, a different country and a different climate.  We also wanted to use Taiwan as a base for touring Asia.

Coming Home!

Sally and I are coming back to the UK!  After spending two years in Taiwan, we are now looking forward to everything that Blighty has to offer!

Here is a rough schedule/itinerary for our travels:

  • 22nd Aug - depart Taiwan, fly to Tokyo.  Spend a full day in Tokyo.
  • 24th Aug - depart Japan, fly to Shanghai. Spend about two weeks in China, travelling by train to see Shanghai, Guilin, Xi'an (home of the terracotta army), Beijing (to see the great wall, the forbidden city etc.)
  • 6th Sept - depart Beijing, take train to Ulaan Bataar.  Begin 21 day Itinerary on the Trans-Mongolian Express.  Stopping in Ulaan Bataar, Irkusk, Moscow, St Petersburg.  About 13 full days spent off the train in those cities, staying in traditional homes, and in Mongolia a traditional nomadic tent.
  • 27th Sept - depart St. Petersburg take train through Baltic States to Poland.  Take onward transport to Berlin.
  • After this it will depend how much money we have left, but we are hoping to spend a couple of days in Amsterdam and Paris before heading to London.  Hopefully we will arrive home with our families in the first week of October.
